Bairro Padre da Cruz – Le Cargo
Maria Matos Teatro Municipal Programme
Part of the Festival de Arte Urbana
19 June — 6pm
While preparing the Artist in the City 2016 program, choreographer Faustin Linyekula expressed his desire to present his work to audiences in neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Greater Lisbon. After the memorable presentation of Le Cargo at Cova da Moura, Teatro Maria Matos co-organizes two more shows, one in Bairro Padre Cruz, in Carnide, in the context of the Urban Art Festival, and another at Vale da Amoreira, in Moita.
Faustin has spent the last decades telling stories: stories of the Congo, of the Democratic Republic of Congo, of Zaire, of the Belgian Congo. Throughout history his country has been labelled all these names. In them, bodies have been marked by History and lives have been marked by violence. How can you not let the body speak of History, leaving the words behind, even if just for a moment? In this journey towards himself, Faustin boards a train that has ceased to exist, whose tracks have been swallowed up by the forest. Seeking what has disappeared, dancing what was banned by the new era, by the God of Miracles. Finding the master drummer who has given up rhythm and become a pastor.
choreography and performance: Faustin Linyekula; music: Flamme Kapaya, Obilo drummers; production: Studios Kabako/Virginie Dupray; coproduction: Centre National de la Danse, supported by DRAC Île-de-France
