In 2006, Faustin Linyekula paid homage to his friend Antoine Vumilia Muhindo, a writer and political prisoner in Kinshasa who was facing a life sentence. The Dialogue Series: III. Dinozord was a painful retracing of the history of Kisangani – where Linyekula grew up, and a town that suffered heavy conflicts between 1997 and 2002 – with the participation of writers, singers, actors and dancers. It dealt with the fate of Linyekula’s childhood friends Kabako and Vumilia. Linyekula decided to return to the work he dedicated to Vumilia, whose circumstances changed significantly: he managed to escape after ten years’ imprisonment, went to live in exile in Sweden and appears on stage in the new play. The situation in the Congo has changed too but has not become easier in any respect. Sur les traces de Dinozord continues where the play left off in 2006 – with the same participants, including Hip Hopper Dinozord and Paris-based countertenor Serge Kakudji, and the same questions that Linyekula asked people in the streets and fields in 2006: what has become of their dreams in war-ravaged Congo?
