In recent years, Christiane Jatahy has focussed on audiovisual language. In Julia, an adaptation of Miss Julie, by August Strindberg, the theatre is transformed into a live cinema. With a combination of pre-filmed and on-the-spot scenes, the film is constructed in the presence of the audience. From classic to contemporary. From what can be watched to what can only be gleaned in the actual presence of the actor and the context of the cinema.
The adaptation of the text also introduces conflict to the here and now, on the day when the audience watch the play and asks themselves who Julia and Jean are, and how they are related today. If Strindberg put two people’s relationship under the magnifying glass, Jatahy puts it through the camera lens, a constant presence and witness, invading the present and immediate encounter with the eye of the public.
